Dekker: Children’s charity helps kids in a big way
Updated: July 6, 2014 2:20AM
When it comes to helping out children in need, Michelle Maxia, director and founder of the Toy Box Connection children’s charity, always thinks big.
Maxia said she’s facing her biggest challenge to date. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis is low on toys. St. Jude specializes in treating childhood leukemia,
brain tumors and sickle cell disease. No child is denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay.
During the late summer and fall, the hospital runs low on toys. That knowledge is all it took to set the wheels in motion for Maxia.
“We can help,” she said. “This is what we do.”
Enter Illinois Elevators Constructors Union Local 2, which is donating a semi truck to the Toy Box Connection, presenting the Orland Park-based charity with the substantial
challenge of filling it with toys and books.
The union will escort the truckload of toys via motorcycle brigade all the way to St. Jude. Along the way, they will be joined by other Elevator Constructors Union members who
have collected toys as well.
Maxia is calling this special project “Christmas in July,” and donations will be collected through Aug. 8. The Toy Box Connection is looking for toys and books that are
appropriate for a child in a hospital such as crafts, Legos, puzzles and dolls.
No sports equipment or outdoor summer toys. For health reasons, the toys must be new. The children range in age from infant to 15.
Toys can be dropped off at any of the four Tinley Park Fire Department stations as well as any of the Orland Fire Protection District stations.
Maxia said trying to collect enough toys and books to fill a semi trailer is a big challenge, but she has faith in the goodness and generosity of people, having seen what can
happen when people come together. She’s also no stranger to big projects — her mission to bring joy to as many children as possible has been infectious.
During its first 18 months, Toy Box Connection was able to distribute more than 350,000 toys to nonprofit organizations that in turn gave them to thousands of sick, homeless,
disabled and underprivileged children.
Among the organizations that receive toys through Toy Box Connection are the Mooseheart orphanage, Together We Cope, Loyola University Hospitals, Ronald McDonald House and many
child advocacy centers and domestic violence shelters.
Toy Box Connection also provides toys and books to soldiers’ families through the Helmets for Hardhats and Operation Homefront organizations.
These toys are not just for Christmas. They are used throughout the year for birthdays, special occasions, incentive programs, hospital visits and counseling situations.
“It takes so little to bring some joy into a child’s life” Maxia said. “I know we can bring some joy to those children in St. Jude. Please help us fill the truck.”

MOOSEHEART KIDS DAY OUT MARCH 2014 A VICTORY ONCE AGAIN!!
Dekker: Mooseheart kids enjoy fun-filled day in Tinley Park

Treating the residents of Mooseheart Child City and School to a day of fun is more than an act of kindness to Michelle Maxia, founder of the Toy Box Connection children’s
It’s about keeping her word.
A 14-year-old boy who resides at Child City told Maxia that he remembered what she told all the kids at their first outing given by the Toy Box Connection. He said she promised
them that as long as there was a Toy Box Connection, she would make these events happen for them.
That was seven years ago and about the time that Orland Park-based Toy Box Connection opened its doors, determined to brighten the lives of underprivileged children by
providing them with a toy, a book or a fun outing.
The day of fun for the Mooseheart children was among the first projects that Maxia put together.
Aurora-based Mooseheart Child City and School consists of 26 independent homes for orphaned or abandoned children ranging in age from 3 to 18 from all over the United
Affectionately known as the “Toy Lady” to the kids at Mooseheart, Maxia said keeping her promise to them is of the utmost importance to her.
“I want to make sure that they know there are people out there that do what they say they will,” she said. “I hope to set an example for them and let them know there are people
On March 21, 150 Mooseheart children were treated to food, gifts and fun at Centennial Bowl in Tinley Park.
Bryan Miller, Mooseheart’s head of recreation, told me that “just getting off of campus is a big deal, but getting all the kids out together at the same time is huge. Maxia is
amazing for helping us in this way.”
Along with her faithful volunteers, Maxia wanted to thank all of the businesses that stepped up to help make it a great and memorable day for the kids.
Pizza was provided by Ed N Joe’s and Durbin’s, both in downtown Tinley Park, along with Giordano’s and Rosati’s, both in Orland Park. Volunteers from Costco, World’s Finest
Chocolate and many area Kohl’s stores volunteers pitched in as well.

Boy Scout’s Toy Drive fills semi-truck at Safety Town
Thanks to family, friends, neighbors, residents and members of the Naperville Junior Woman’s Club, Tim Corbett, a local Boy Scout in Troop 107, achieved his goal to “fill a semi” with new and
gently-used toys for less fortunate girls and boys. His Toy Drive, a project that will help him earn his Eagle Scout award, was held Sat., June 23, at Safety Town under sunny skies.
Though he lost count, young Corbett estimated nearly 150 generous people either dropped off toys recently at his house or on Saturday at Safety Town during the 5-hour Toy Drive to benefit the Toy
For the project, Corbett had to choose and manage a project that benefits the local community. He partnered with Toy Box Connection and Safety Town to complete the project.
Growing up, Corbett always wanted to find the cool toys he outgrew a new home. He discovered Toy Box Connection through a newspaper article several years back and began donating the toys he
outgrew. Toy Box Connection supports underprivileged kids with new and gently used toys, games and books.
“I am doing this because I love helping children,” said Corbett earlier, now grateful for the outpouring of support he’d received.
At 2PM, Corbett, his friends and family were closing up the collection site, basking in the day’s success and time for a few photos.
The largest item was a backyard playhouse. Other donations included bicycles, big wheels, books, board games and a whole bunch of brand new toys from a toy store that had been slightly scratched
“Everything Tim needed for the day was donated,” said Bill Corbett, pleased that his son’s idea had been so well received by the community. The semi-truck came from 3MD Re-location Services,
Safety Town provided its parking lot for drop off event and 3MD bought lunch, he added.

CONGRATULATIONS THANK YOU TIM CORBETT & FAMILY WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR YOUR GENEROSITY
